My curious gaze turns to glance at Hugo when he pulls in front of a brown brick building in a business estate in Ravenshoe. Compared to the numerous elaborate houses and apartment blocks Hugo has taken me to the past few weeks, this one is rundown and dated.

Hugo remains quiet as he unlatches his seatbelt and opens the driver’s side door of his car. My lips quirk in suspicion as I follow him up the concrete path. The foyer inside the office building isn’t any more glamorous than the outside. There is a wooden staircase that's well overdue to be varnished on my right, a hallway table with a large selection of pamphlets to my left, and a long corridor with a range of therapist names and their specialties written on a plaque on the brown wooden doors lining the corridor.

“Don’t let the outdated surroundings fool you. Avery is very good at what she does. She is just one of those rare people who refuses to work for Isaac exclusively,” Hugo informs me before walking into the small foyer and sitting in one of the handful of hard plastic chairs gathered there.

My brows shoot up into the air. Isaac needs a full-time therapist on his payroll?

Hugo’s boisterous chuckle echoes around the desolate space. “Not for him. Avery is for his staff and family,” he replies to my surprised expression.

“Then why does he want her to be exclusive? I ask.

“Isaac values exclusivity because it comes with an invisible clause of loyalty attached to it.”

My brows furrow together.

Hugo leans his elbow on his knee. “If you solely relied on one person, say he was your only source of bread and butter, you would never bite the hand that feeds you, right?” he queries.

I take some time considering his statement before shaking my head. “No, but not everyone is that smart. People get greedy.”

Hugo nods. “Yes, they do, but that's why Isaac generously rewards his staff for their dedication and loyalty.”

“You can buy loyalty?” I ask, my tone skeptical.

Hugo smiles. “No, you can’t, but Isaac has a candid knack for reading people. Add that to his brilliant business mind and bucket-loads of cash, and you have a formula for a very successful empire. When his staff gain his trust, they are awarded for it. If they lose it, they lose everything.”

My heart plummets into my stomach. “I lost his trust.”

Hugo shakes his head. “You don’t count, Izzy,” he replies, his voice laced with laughter.

He stands from the chair and walks over to me, standing immobile in the foyer. “For one, you're not a staff member of Isaac’s, and two, you didn’t lose his trust, it was just misplaced for a few days,” he says with a cheeky wink.

Any reply I’m yet to formulate in my muddled mind is halted when a soft voice at the end of the hall calls out my name. A broad grin stretches across Hugo’s face before he spins on his heels and strolls back to take his seat.
